Granada and the airport

August 22, 2026

We got up, moved the car, grabbed a snack and headed toward Alhambra.

Walking toward Alhambra

The fort on the hill was a city within the city. One quick interesting side detail is that they use your passport as your ticket – they scan it anytime you go in and out of the gate.

Our first stop was our timed entry for the Nazaries Palaces – simply put … it was amazing.

Entering the palaces
The amazing plaster work in the hall
The gardens and a pool to keep things cooler
Plaster work on the wall with paint
Fountain of lions
The ceiling was amazing – the geometry of it all
The exterior of that ceiling

There were so many details on everything that was done. Among the detail was these odd attempts to Europeanize things – this was a lesser extent of what happened at the palace in Sevilla.

A modification of the original

There had been an earthquake in Granda so some places were closed off and one of the older palaces was closed. It actually turned out later that the Granada Cathedral was also closed due to the earthquake’s damage.

Entrance to the Carlos V Palace

After that we wandered the Carlos V palace – it was a really add-on to the Nazaries palaces. From what I understand it was supposed to be a modern European entrance but never quite worked out that way. The fact that it is a square with a circular center also makes it hard to be useful. The whole thing had a bolted on feel like the ceiling they tried to add.

Walking through the gardens

After we finished there we walked through the gardens to the Generalife – it was a summer palace. (This palace name led to a bunch of multi-level marketing jokes)

From there, we made our way back to the city and shopped a bit and got lunch at La Turquesa. After that we wrapped up and made our way to the airport for our flight Mallorca. We flew Veuling (a Spanish low cost carrier). They asked us to turn off our cellphones as we boarded because they were fueling the plane. That was a first for me.

We made our way to our lodging at Ca na Magdalena after a stop at Cantonet in Pollença. Cantonet was a lovely Italian spot before we got to Porto Pollença

Goodby Granada!
