The road to Rome

Sunday, September 29, 2024

In the morning, we planned to drive back to Naples and catch the train to Rome. Then we could enjoy the day in Rome before heading home on Monday.

Now, I have a history of messing up calculations of time or directions, and today was one of those. We had a 3 hour ride to Naples and we had planned for an hour of buffer and that was gone. We took off anyway and we were able to make up 30 minutes. It turns out Goggle Maps has pretty bad speed limit data and the people in Italy drive fast.

So we made it to the Naples Central Train station and dropped the car and made it to the train. Then we sat there…..turned out one of the doors on our car was not functioning. So after 30 minutes of working on it, they got it working, and then got on our way to Rome.

Welcome to Roma

We made it to Rome and dropped our bags near our AirBnB – Apartment in Travestre. We started with lunch at Nannarella. My friend really enjoyed the pesto pasta.

Obligatory Colosseum stop

We then made our way to Basilica di San Clemente. It’s a 12th century church with a 4th and 1st century church below. The levels are super interesting and made us ponder how much a city gets built up over time.

Down to the 4th century church
1st century temple on the third level

It is an amazing example of these layers of history.

From there we stopped by the Patheon and then walked to the Vatican. We were planning to climb up the dome. However, the line was super long so we bailed and made our way to the AirBnB.

From there we enjoyed dinner and then got Tiramisu from Two Sizes.

After wandering around Rome at night we turned in.
